Root Canal Dentist; It's Not as Scary as You Think

Root canal treatment has a reputation it doesn’t deserve. The truth is, modern endodontic treatment in Cheam is comfortable, straightforward, and often the best way to save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted.

At Nonsuch Park Dental, we take a gentle approach to root canal procedures. Dr Tobi will ensure you’re fully numb and comfortable before we begin, and we’ll talk you through every step so you know exactly what’s happening. Most patients are surprised at how painless and quick the procedure actually is.

If you’ve been putting off treatment because you’re nervous or you’re in pain and not sure what to do, we’re here to help.

What's Included in a Root Canal Procedure

Root canal treatment is needed when the soft tissue (pulp) inside your tooth becomes infected or inflamed. This can happen due to deep decay, a crack, repeated dental work, or trauma to the tooth. Left untreated, the infection can spread, causing pain, abscesses, and eventually tooth loss.

During the root canal procedure, Dr Tobi will carefully remove the infected pulp from inside the tooth, clean and disinfect the root canals, then seal them to prevent further infection. The tooth is then restored with a filling or crown to protect it and bring it back to full function.

The treatment is usually completed in one or two appointments, depending on the complexity. We use local anaesthetic throughout, so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure. Most patients describe the experience as no more uncomfortable than having a filling.

Root canal treatment starts from £425. We’ll provide a full written quote before any treatment begins, and 0% interest-free finance is available to spread the cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does root canal treatment hurt?

No. We use a local anaesthetic to completely numb the area before we start. Most patients feel nothing during the procedure and are pleasantly surprised at how comfortable it is.

Common signs include severe toothache, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, darkening of the tooth, swelling or tenderness in the gums, or a recurring pimple on the gum. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, book a consultation so Dr Tobi can assess the tooth.

Keeping your natural tooth is almost always the better option if possible. A root canal saves the tooth while removing the infection, allowing you to keep your natural smile and avoid the need for implants or bridges.

Most root canal procedures take between 60 and 90 minutes and can often be completed in a single appointment. More complex cases may require a second visit.

You may experience some mild tenderness for a few days, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter painkillers. Dr Tobi will advise whether you need a crown to protect the tooth long-term.

With good care, a tooth that has had root canal treatment can last a lifetime. We’ll give you advice on how to look after your tooth and recommend a crown if needed to protect it.
